Faith Sings on Saturdays

Hello all, I am writing to announce the conclusion of Faith Sings on Saturdays and to express my gratitude to you for following this project, which I began in December 2021.
This project followed the format of a single-take recording posted to my website every Saturday Morning. Each cover was accompanied by a visual and written reflection on the song. I approached singing these covers as an artist first and foremost. I sought to draw attention to the words of each song and to express my interpretation of their meaning through the interplay of singing, writing, and photography. Through this project I have become more acquainted with the process of expressing my experience of music.
Thank you to those who wrote to convey your personal experiences of my covers.
A special thank you to Robert Aziz, who co-wrote the written reflections that accompany the covers, and whose invaluable guidance advanced my understanding of this project.
I am looking forward to sharing new work in the future.

a single take recording of
Baltimore

Baltimore is a metaphor for the world we have created, a place of arrested existence, a place in which life no longer moves freely. It is a world in which everyone and everything is slowly dying because it is a world in which there exists no place for life to enter. In truth we are all responsible for this circumstance.
Text co-written by Faith Patrick and Robert Aziz.
Cover recorded on Ukulele.

Big Yellow Taxi

As credible as ideological causes may at times be, deeper ethical pieces of the puzzle may at times get lost in them, meaning the sacrifice of the trees for the parking lot may be lamented by those who never saw the trees in the first place, never encountered them experientially.

a single take recording of
Mercedes Benz
When the attendance numbers at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 grew so rapidly that the decision had to be taken to make it a free concert, as practical as that decision may have been, it marked for those in attendance an important concession to the zeitgeist of that time--that love as the spiritual essence of our interpersonal existence has nothing whatsoever to do with materialism and monetary gain. The Woodstock Music and Art Fair was held from the 15th to the 18th of August, 1969. Mercedes Benz was written and recorded by Janis Joplin in the spirit of that time in the year following her performance at the concert.

a single take recording of
It's My Party
Although, at times, we should descend into experiences of personal misfortune, we must, unlike the song's protagonist, be especially watchful not to get "caught in the utterly hopeless predicament of grieving the loss of an intimacy that had never really existed." a single take recording of
The Midnight Special
Under very restrictive circumstances, we will at times assign meaning to things that we otherwise would not. In this way, for prisoners, the light of a train, The Midnight Special, was experienced as the light of salvation. In this way the hope of men found something to which it could attach.

a single take recording of
In My Life
At the time John Lennon was writing the lyrics for In My Life he had lost several people who were important to his life journey, including the Uncle who raised him, his mother, who helped focus his dream of becoming a musician, and Stuart Sutcliffe, the Beatles' original bass guitarist.
This song, which Lennon said was the first personal song he wrote, speaks to the fact that for all of us the conditions of life are temporary (There are places I'll remember / All my life though some have changed) and that as human beings we are tasked with continuing to move forward while holding in consciousness the "people and things" that have been taken from our lives.

a single take recording of
Tonight
I like Sibylle Baier for the same reason I like Tammy Wynette. When I listen to Baier sing I get the sense she’s telling me something that genuinely comes from her lived experience. I like the song ‘Tonight’, which I cover here, because it tells a simple story about two people who know each other well. This cover was recorded on ukulele.
“Sibylle Baier opted not to pursue an acting or singing career, and eventually moved to the United States, where she concentrated on bringing up a family. The songs that made up her album Colour Green were home reel-to-reel tape recordings Baier had made in Germany between 1970 and 1973. Some 30 years later, her son Robby compiled a CD from these recordings to give to family members as presents. He also gave a copy to Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis, who in turn passed it along to the Orange Twin label. Orange Twin released the album in February 2006.” [Wikipedia]

a single take recording of
In Bloom
To me this song describes one of our current cultural crises – the surface level engagement of life, the moving meaninglessly and carelessly from one thing to the next, as if a spectator.
In singing this song I took inspiration from Sturgill Simpson’s cover. What I find most compelling and meaningful about his version is his choice to change the lyrics from “But he knows not what it means, Knows not what it means, And I say” to “But he don't know what it means, Don't know what it means to love someone”.
Recorded on ukulele.

a single take recording of
Blowin' In The Wind
How many times must a man look up
before he can see the sky?
And how many years must one man have
before he can hear people cry?
The answer my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is somewhere in the wind.
Recorded one month ago today on ukulele.

a single take recording of
Dream a Little Dream
I can’t remember when I first heard this song or whose version it was. I can only say, this is one of those pieces of music it seems like I’ve always known. Recently I listened to Ozzie Nelson sing it (a 1931 recording). I really enjoyed hearing a male voice unfold the song. I hope you enjoy my version of it, which was recorded on ukulele.

So This is Love
It can be interesting to re-encounter a song you knew only as a child. My friend Julide recently brought this song to my attention again. Life is a journey of unceasing challenges. But there are some experiences, like loving someone and being loved, that really do make life worth living. An Ilene Woods cover, recorded on ukulele.
Sometimes love is not what you thought, and not what you pictured. Sometimes, love takes time, hey, hey. An Aldous Harding cover, using electric ukulele and violin bow.

a single take recording of
There Stands the Glass
This song makes me think about how we all use things, be it alcohol or other means, to keep ourselves behind glass, which is to say, separated from encountering life in process. I am grateful I was first shown Webb Pierce's cover of it, which he recorded in 1953. It is a raw piece of music, and the simplicity and honesty of the lyrics moves me. I used a violin bow and ukulele for the instrumentals.

What I like about Tammy Wynette, besides her special voice, is her sincerity. When she sings I can sense she is telling me about something that is really rooted in her experience. I used a violin bow and ukulele for the instrumentals.
